I’ve recently had to confront a new diabetes challenge, and with it, I’ve reevaluated how I manage my carb intake. Currently, I’m aiming for about 50 carbs a day to stabilize my blood sugar. Once I have it under control, I’ll gradually increase to around 35 carbs per meal. This shift has made me more mindful of what I’m eating and how it impacts my health.

In the past, I wasn’t too strict about tracking my food intake. I knew I was eating less and cutting down on carbs, but I often found myself caught in the dilemma of “Should I eat this or that?” I realized I needed more clarity, so I turned to some research to figure out just how many carbs I should be consuming.

As with most things, the advice I found was varied and sometimes conflicting. Some sources recommended as little as 20g of carbs a day, while others suggested up to 100g for men. It can be confusing, especially when these opinions are presented as hard facts.

To get a more reliable perspective, I checked the American Diabetes Association’s guidelines. They recommend starting with 45-60 grams of carbs per meal, though they also emphasize that this can vary depending on individual needs and how you manage your diabetes. Unfortunately, I don’t recall getting specific guidance from my doctor, so I’m taking matters into my own hands, with caution.

Right now, my primary goal is to get my blood glucose level within a healthy range. As a secondary goal, I’m also aiming to lose weight. To achieve this, I’m targeting about 50g of carbs per day to see how my body responds. I’m also closely monitoring my blood glucose levels to avoid any episodes of hypoglycemia.

This approach feels more sustainable and tailored to my needs. As I continue this journey, I’ll adjust as necessary, but for now, this is the plan.
